Citywalks

Sample the atmosphere and take in the history during a city walk. You can already smell the history when wandering through Alkmaar’s old city centre. Alkmaar has a rich history and no less than 400 listed buildings are cared for within the old centre.

If you wish to take a stroll under your own steam, a great way of doing so is to follow the historic city walk of the Tourist Information Office. With the walk lasting for around 2 hours, the magnificently illustrated booklet will take you past a selection of listed buildings and, along the way, will try to acquaint you with the intimate atmosphere and history of our special city.
If you are planning on bringing the children along, that won’t be a problem as they will be kept amused by the hunt which runs in parallel to the walk. The booklet can be purchased from the Tourist Information Office. If you would like to prepare for the walk at home, why not order the booklets from the Tourist Information Office web shop in advance of your visit.

If you visit the city as part of a group, you may like to opt for a city walk with one of our guides. With a great deal of verve and enthusiasm, our chatterbox hosts and hostesses will tell you all about the history, beautiful buildings and special residents of Alkmaar. At the end of the walk, you will have to agree that Alkmaar is the most beautiful city in North Holland and perhaps even in the whole of the Netherlands! Would you like to book a guide? Take a look at www.opstapmeteengroep.nl  or telephone the Tourist Information Office on 0031-72-5114284.

A guided tour

If you fancy talking a walk with a guide, but you are not part of a group, you can pop along to the Tourist Information Office every Friday in July and August. An experienced guide will take you along on a voyage of discovery, lasting for one and a half hours, through the historic inner city. You do need to reserve a place on the walk in advance, which you can do at the Tourist Information Office in Alkmaar, or through the web shop.
