8 October The Relief of Alkmaar

Who did not hear of Alkmaar?
Of the battle at the Frisian Gate
For more than six times fifty years?
For more than six times fifty years?
When Spain’s lust for Dutch blood
Was reined in by Alkmaar’s valour
Mortally terrifying the enemies’ soldiers
Mortally terrifying the enemies’ soldiers
This you learn from the country’s history
Of the Victory at Alkmaar
This you learn from the country’s history
Of the Victory at Alkmaar

(Of the Victory at Alkmaar, Alkmaar folk song)

The city has also known bleak times. For example, the Eighty Years’ War was not exactly fun. In August 1573, Alkmaar was besieged by the Spaniards and on 8 October of that same year, through perseverance and courage, the people from Alkmaar were able to liberate themselves from the hold of the Spanish. You can read a great story about that here.

Every year, this event is still exuberantly celebrated during the Relief of Alkmaar on 8 October. On this day, Alkmaar brims over with activities. The best known activity is the huge procession through the inner city which lasts for 2 hours, but the children’s games, the tilt at the ring, the fire bridge demonstrations and live music are also very popular with the whole of Alkmaar and the surrounding areas. You can take a look at full day’s programme on the 8 October Association’s website.
